Growing Pains: Taking Your Business to the Next Level!

Online Course Description

In the last 10 years a handful of resources were published for music therapy entrepreneurs. However, few advanced resources for those who have been in business more than three years are available specifically for music therapy business owners. This workshop intends to help address the gap by presenting the implications or “growing pains” of business expansion.

Topics of this CMTE include human resources, space/location, finances and creating a plan. Financial growing pains such as getting/retaining clients, cash flow, collections and financing will be explored. Strategies for building a team of mentors and network of business professionals and consultants (e.g. finance/business manager, bookkeeper/accountants, employment attorney, human resources consultant, payroll company, relationship with a banker) to assist business owners in navigating growth and changes will be stressed.

Participants will learn through video, reading and personal reflection.

Learning Objectives

Business owners will be able to identify:

  • At least three current/future challenges or “growing pains” for growing their business (CBMT IV.A.1, 3-4)
  • At least  three people that they need to add to their business network/support system (IV.A.4; B.13-14)
  • A plan for hiring contractors/employees (IV.B.8)
  • Their current stage of their business development and role as a business owner (IV.A.1, 3-4))
  • The essential components of a handbook (IV.B.13)
  • Three financial reports that they need to understand for their business (IV.B.13-14)

About Julie:
Julie graduated with a Master’s in Music Therapy from Western Michigan University. She has completed training from the Center for Biomedical Training as a neurologic music therapy fellow from Colorado State University. She has been providing music therapy services to youth with special needs and retirees to the San Diego area since 2001. In 2004 Julie co-founded The Music Therapy Center of California (MTCCA), where she is currently vice-president and Internship Director. Her research investigating the effects of music intervention on reducing agitation in hospice patients with dementia has been published in Voices: A World Forum for Music Therapy.

In her work with children with special needs, Julie co-authored the “In Harmony: Integrated Learning Program.” She is co-owner and co-founder of NoteAbilities, Inc. which produces “Kibbles Rockin’ Clubhouse” (a DVD series to teach social and communication skills to children with autism) and is co-host of “Autism Toolkit Podcast” a resource for parents, teachers and therapists. Julie is a founding board member of Banding Together, a San Diego non-profit whose mission is to provide music experiences, mentorships and instruments to youth with special needs.
